Losing weight is a complicated business at the best of times.
Myths and misconceptions run rife everywhere, especially about the miraculous weight-loss properties of various foods and beverages. We’re sure you’ve heard your share. So have we & one of the most common – that mostly everybody believes to be kinda true – is to have a glass of warm water first thing in the morning (with honey, with lemon…take your pick :).
Apparently if you’re trying to lose weight and not doing this, then you are destined to a life of obesity! Right?
Wrong. From long and painful experience, let us appraise you of a cold, hard fact - Warm water by itself has no effect on your weight. But what it does do however is to have several effects (beneficial or not, we’ll leave you to decide) on your body such as:
A glass of water before a meal fills up your stomach slightly (no great magic there). But if you wait about 20 mts to eat, then you’ll start your meal feeling slightly full & therefore typically eat less than you would have otherwise. This is because it takes the stomach about 20 minutes to convery a feeling of fullness to the brain (known as satiety).
2. Less Water Retention
Drinking more water dilutes the amount of sodium in your body, leading to less water retention. Water retention in some people causes weight gain and bloating. But it is possible to drink too much water also, so if you’re planning to drink more than eight glasses, do so knowing that it could have some possible side-effects. Moderation we believe is key!
3. Cold not warm!
While all the hoo-haa is about warm water, its actually drinking cold water that has the most direct effect on weight loss. But its marginal to say the least. Cold water (not warm) brings down the body temperature and forces the body to burn a few extra calories to bring the body’s temperature back up to normal. But in our minds, marginal or not, that can only be a good thing, no?
4. Thirst not Hunger!
We’re confused people. That we know.But did you know that we most often confuse thirst with hunger, since they both cause a feeling of longing and anticipation. That is why drinking a glass of water before a meal or even between meals often satisfies those pangs, staves off that longing and prevents unnecessary snacking. So the next time you’re hungry, try a glass of water first. And then in 15 minutes if you’re still hungry, then head for the kitchen…
